drafted

Permanent Linkby mikefrench on Mon Mar 15, 2010 12:31 am

had a good draft and i want to post about it

drafted zen/wwk/wwk just now.

pack 1 pick 1 - emeria angel

then adventuring gear, blazing torch (trying to stay open, didn't see any bombs really). after that some black flying dude, heartstabber mesquito maybe? which was pretty sweet. seeing some good red cards and worried i might've gone the wrong way, but i picked up some other solid picks like windborne charge.

pack 2 pick 1 was...can't really remember. but this pack was great. got lightkeeper of emeria (2/4 flier), 2x tomb hex, smother, the 3/2 black flier. got some good hate drafts in later on.

pack 3 pick 1, can't really remember. but got a 2nd 3/2 black flier, 2 more tomb hex. fledgling griffin, iona's judgment.

so it looked light on creatures but some great great cards. basically

13 creatures including
emeria angel
lightkeeper of emeria
fledgling griffin
2x 3/2 black flier
heartstabber mosquito
kitesail apprentice
kor cartographer
kor skyfisher
pilgrim's eye
apex hawks
talus paladin
crypt ripper

some other stuff like

windborne charge
4x tomb hex
smother
adventuring gear
blazing torch

totaling 22 in all

and 18 lands, including 1 quicksand and 2 of that sejeri step which i wouldn't play again, i thought the protection would be nice for unblockable stuff but it just screwed me by coming in tapped more than anything.

played a pickup game and beat a fast black deck, he had turn 1-3 creatures and i didn't, but i stabilized and won, kicking that 2/4 flier to gain like 4 life was nice.

played a match, won 2-0. his deck was ok, 2x searing blaze, some allies and tricks but my fliers just stomped him. card advantage gained through emeria angel and heartstabber mosquito was just too good for him. game 1 he had a decent fast start and got me down to like 5 eventually but it wasn't as close as the life totals showed. game 2 i just outclassed him, when i won my hand was literally tomb hex x2 and iona's judgment, with 2 fliers on the board.

had to leave after that (actually gave my round 1 opponent the match 2-1 after beating him game 1) unfortunately cause we're going on vacation tomorrow and i had to help pack but i think the deck was a fantastic deck. i mean, 9 or 10 flying creatures including some really good ones (heartstabber, emeria, life gainer dude), 5 good removal cards and that iona's judgment which isn't too shabby, quicksand and blazing torch so really 8 removal cards.

things i did poorly, shoudl've prolly drafted 2-3 more creatures, cause even in my sideboard i had like MAYBE 2 creatures i could've sided in which isn't great. but i like that i stayed open and waited to draft the best possible card cause i coulda drafted some random red like spire barrage in pack 1 pick 2 but then would've really hated myself when i saw that 4th pick heartstabber mosquito (how did 3 people pass that? i dunno) and probably would've made some bad decision to go 3 colors or something.

was blazing torch pack 1 pick 3 a bad pick? i had drafted emeria and adventurer's gear which i don't think anyone would question, but blazing torch pick 3 may have been questionable. i don't remember the pack having anything exceptional and actually blazgin torch is pretty good i think.

recover does seem better than grim harvest, but you don't need either if you don't have good targets in your graveyard for them though. Sign in blood is a definite include though, don't cut that. Just remember that it doubles as a kill spell if they have 2 or less life, doesn't come up too often but i've killed ppl with it before.

yeah it's hilarious how many times i've seen ppl misplay that. mike actually won a game recently b/c his opponent sign in blood'd himself instead of him, it was pretty funny.

So I went 2-1 in the eight person legacy pauper tournament. Some ppl questioned it hymn was legal bc it had been reprinted as an uncommon and supposedly you have to go with the last printed rarity, but I told them I looked online for pauper format rules and didn't see anything except for mtgo. One guy was playing an artifact affinity deck with the only card banned in mtgo pauper, the cranium equip, and he did bad too. Top three were all red burn decks, two of which I lost to.

Next weeks fnm is standard

lol someone played affinity with cranial plating and lost?? That deck is tier 1 even without plating in pauper, i don't see how it can lose with plating, that's just crazy.

Yeah he's one of the better players here too, Greg. Not sure what happened, I guess he said he never drew them and got burned out by the red decks. Which were tough to beat, it's true.

He played that affinity deck the day before in some multiplayer games we were doing for fun and owning our standard decks with it.
